National Night Out

The Daytona Beach Police Department will host National Night Out from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, at Julia T. and Charles W. Cherry Sr. Cultural & Educational Center, 925 W. Engram Blvd., Daytona Beach.

There will be food, music, games and giveaways, K9 actions, vehicle tours, bounce houses and children's fingerprinting.

Learn how to ‘ReGrow the Loop’

Cultivate your green thumb during a free workshop from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, at the Ormond Beach Regional Library, 30 S. Beach St.

Keynote speaker Dr. Gail Hansen De Chapman, University of Florida’s Extension landscape architect and design specialist, will share landscape design techniques that can enhance the beauty of a Florida landscape. Also, participants will learn about native plant landscapes.

Low-cost pet clinics

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will sponsor three low-cost pet shot clinics Saturday, Aug. 5.

The first clinic will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at Libbylu's Grooming, 2102 S. Ridgewood Ave., Edgewater.

The second clinic will be from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at Big Lots, 1998 State Road 44, New Smyrna Beach.

More help available for Tropical Storm Ian recovery

Help is still available for Tropical Storm Ian survivors through Disaster Case Management. This FEMA-funded program, managed by Volunteer Florida, provides case managers that work directly with disaster survivors to identify their recovery unmet needs, develop a goal-oriented recovery plan and match them with resources to help achieve long-term recovery.

The state of Florida has contracted with multiple agencies to work with faith-based and volunteer organizations to support survivors through DCM.

Port Orange library offers free programs for adults

The Port Orange Regional Library, 1005 City Center Circle, will offer a variety of programs in August.

•Tiny Art Show: The Port Orange community created Tiny Art and it is on display for public viewing. The Tiny Art Show is on display until Aug. 5.

•Florida’s Water Birds: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8. Join us as David Hartgrove of the Halifax River Audubon society discusses Florida water birds and basic bird watching techniques. The Halifax River Audubon Society promotes understanding of and an interest in wildlife and the environment that supports it.

•Living Your Best Life: A Monthly Health and Wellness Series: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9. Anne S. Tracy, R.N. of Halifax Health provides information related to your health and well being. August’s topic is hydration.

•Swing Dance Exhibition: 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11. The Goldstar Ballroom and members of the local chapter of USA Dance, Inc. will dazzle us with a display of swing and other dancing. Come learn the history of swing in this celebration of the Spirit of '45 and the Greatest Generation!

Fundraiser for St. Jude's

Pars and a Purpose for Children’s Cure, the Fraternal Order of Eagles #4469 in Daytona Beach Shores and Webber's Steakhouse will host a benefit for St. Jude's Children's Hospital from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at The Eagles, 3516 S. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach Shores.

Food will be prepared by Webber's. Tickets are $20, which includes gratuity for volunteer staff at Eagles Club Daytona Beach Shores. The ticket includes one drink ticket, salad, chicken piccata and baked ziti with sauce and desserts.

There will be door prizes, raffles and 50/50. Stir It Up Duo will perform from 6-8 p.m.

Tickets are on sale until Aug. 10. Advance purchase only.

All proceeds will go to St. Jude's.

Hometown News will again publish “In Season” at the end of September.

“In Season” is a master calendar for special events in Volusia County between Sept. 29 and March 31. It includes concerts, festivals, sporting events, theater performances, holiday events and art exhibits.

Congressman to speak at Tiger Bay Club

U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz, R-FL, will be the guest speaker at the Aug. 10 meeting of Tiger Bay Club of Volusia County at the Halifax River Yacht Club, 331 S. Beach St., Daytona Beach.

Congressman Waltz represents Florida’s Sixth Congressional District and serves on the House Armed Services Committee, Foreign Affairs Committee and Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations.

Warehouse space needed

The Volusia County Toys for Tots program is in need of donated warehouse space for the 2023 campaign.

Last year Volusia Toys for Tots distributed toys to more than 15,000 children.

The donated space must be at least 3,000 square feet and air conditioned, preferably in West Volusia as the majority of volunteers reside there. The space is needed from Oct. 1 through Dec. 31.

A liability policy will be provided. All volunteers sign a hold harmless agreement. A tax donation letter will be provided in January to the owner.

Choral group offers Summer Sing and auditions

The Bel Canto Singers of Daytona is launching its 52nd Season with Summer Sing at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, and Tuesday, Aug. 15, at Spruce Creek High School Choral Room, 801 Taylor Road, Port Orange.

The event is an informal evening of singing and networking. Free and open to anyone older than 16. Music and materials will be provided.

Volunteers in Police Service needs recruits

The Volunteers in Police Service Unit of the Port Orange Police Department is in need of recruits.

VIPS provides free uniforms, vehicles, equipment and training. It is a national organization in partnership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Federal Bureau of Justice Assistance.

Volunteers must be at least 21, pass a background check, pass a traffic control exam and dedicate a minimum of 12 hours per month.

Vince Carter Charity Gala

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed for the Daytona Beach Police Department’s Citizens on Patrol (CoP) program.

There are 20 members of the Daytona Beach Police Department’s Citizens on Patrol, who assist at traffic accidents, conduct vacation house checks, and check on disabled vehicles as part of their patrols of residential and business centers in the city.

Ormond Beach Historical Society

The Ormond Beach Historical Society will present the exhibit “Family Matters: Francis Taylor Pearson Plimpton (1928-2015)” until Sept. 21 at the MacDonald House, 38 E. Granada Blvd.

Francis Taylor Pearsons Plimpton was the third member of the Ames family to live in Ormond Beach. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as an officer aboard the USS Instill, a minesweeper. He and his wife had a successful landscape business and helped renovate Ames Park.

The exhibit is from the collection donated by Jane Plimpton Gottier and Per Ames Plimpton.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.

Bus tours

The Ormond Beach Historical Society is once again offering historic two-hour bus tours of the Ormond Loop.

Entertaining guides share secret stories and tales of Ormond Beach’s historic people and place.

Tours are offered from 10 a.m. to noon the first and third Saturdays of the month.

NSB Library plans adult programs

The New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, 1001 S. Dixie Freeway, offers a variety of programs to help adults learn new skills and make new friends.

•Library volunteer Carolyn Carlisle will offer genealogy assistance from 1 to 3 p.m. Mondays, Aug. 7, 14, 21, 28.

•Craft a colorful trinket tray by transforming a plain wooden tray into a colorful container at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8. Using colored pencils and distinctive coloring sheets, participants can customize a storage tray. All skill levels welcome. All supplies are provided. Space is reserved for those who register. •Council on Aging/Halifax Health Continuing Care co-presentation is 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10. New Smyrna Museum of History

The New Smyrna Museum of History will host a lecture, "Jane Murray Sheldon, A Pioneer Family Legacy,'' with Greg Holbrook at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at 120 Sams Ave., New Smyrna Beach.

Museum Director Greg Holbrook will share the story of New Smyrna's most famous pioneer women who became known to the community as "Grandma Sheldon."

Canaveral National Seashore
